PERFORMING ARTS

Performing arts shall be defined as all forms of (artistic) presentation that use the body, face, voice, and presence of the artist as the medium.

This is distinguished from the plastic arts which uses materials such as paint, metal, clay or other materials which are molded or otherwise transformed into (mostly permanent) physical objects.

The performing arts are usually presented before an audience. Examples of performing arts are acrobatics, comedy, dance, magic, music, opera, film, theater and circus arts. The artists are called performers, actors, dancers, musicians, etc.

For purposes of our inquiry, related supporting arts such as costuming, makeup, scenery, lighting, sound, writing, directing, etc. (most of which have design and execution components) are to be included.

AUDIENCE

An audience is a group of people who experience, view and may even overtly participate in a performing art presentation.

Segmentation - Audience is used singularly in this document for purposed of brevity. For the purpose of this inquiry, we want to segment the audience into workable groups commensurate with common categories of performing arts

Scope - For purposes of our inquiry, we want to consideration to go beyond the traditional model of bodies in seats at a venue. Alternative concepts and technologies should be pursued provided it can be realistically argued that revenue will be generated commensurate with the cost of service.
